(or did the MET Police simply forget that we have human rights?)

by MumsUncut

Some of the Fortnum 145 defendants – who are as I naively understand the law, all innocent until proven guilty (the trials start tomorrow) – have been sent this from Commander Simon Pountain at the MET Police:
A letter to the Fortnum145 defendants from the MET

Is it me, or is the tone of this a little menacing. Are we being advised not to protest, even in a non violent way – just in case we lose our jobs or our education?

I had a quick check of the Universal declaration of Human Rights. And to my knowledge;

Article 19.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

and Article 20.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.

are still there.

So here’s to the student demonstrators against Fees and Cuts on 9th and to our own Fortnum145 defendants and their supporters on 9th and 10th onwards as the trials begin. Don’t let them take your right to peaceful assembly and association, and your freedom of expression – we are angry about tax-avoidance and angry about the cuts. Let’s show it.
